🌎 Why September 11 Is Historically Important

September 11 brings together several very different strands of world history:

  1. Scottish resistance – Battle of Stirling Bridge, 1297.
  2. European religious and military history – Great Siege of Malta, 1565.
  3. European exploration – Henry Hudson’s arrival in the Manhattan region, 1609.
  4. American political history – Alexander Hamilton’s appointment, 1789.
  5. Indian spiritual history – Vivekananda’s Chicago address, 1893.
  6. Latin American history – Chilean coup and the death of Salvador Allende, 1973.
  7. Space exploration – Mars Global Surveyor’s arrival at Mars, 1997.
  8. Modern world history – the September 11, 2001 attacks.
  9. Humanitarian and disaster history – the Mecca crane disaster and Libya’s Derna floods.

September 11 is therefore a date of extraordinary historical contrasts: exploration, political transformation, spiritual dialogue, scientific achievement, natural disasters, war, tragedy and remembrance.
