Good morning to everyone present here.
Respected Principal, distinguished teachers, dear guests, and my fellow students,
It is a great pleasure and privilege to speak to you today about Onam, the festival that brings the people of Kerala together in a spirit of joy, friendship, equality, and hope.
Onam is one of Kerala’s most important cultural celebrations. Traditionally associated with the harvest season, it is also deeply connected with the legend of King Mahabali, a ruler remembered for his generosity, justice, and concern for the well-being of his people. According to tradition, Mahabali returns to Kerala during the Onam season, and people welcome him with flowers, feasts, music, dance, and celebrations.
But the real significance of Onam goes far beyond its colourful traditions.
The story of Mahabali represents an ideal society in which people lived with dignity, prosperity, and equality. Whether we understand the story as mythology, tradition, or cultural heritage, its values continue to speak to us today.
As college students, we are at an important stage of our lives. We are not only preparing for careers; we are preparing to become the citizens, professionals, leaders, teachers, entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, and social workers of tomorrow.
Therefore, Onam gives us an opportunity to ask ourselves an important question:
What kind of society do we want to build?
Do we want a society divided by religion, caste, language, wealth, politics, or social status? Or do we want a society where every person is respected and given an opportunity to live with dignity?
The spirit of Onam clearly points towards the second.
One of the most beautiful aspects of Onam is that it brings people together. In Kerala, people from different religious and social backgrounds participate in Onam celebrations. A Pookkalam may be created by many hands, an Onam Sadya may be shared by many people, and a celebration becomes meaningful when everyone feels included.
This is particularly relevant to college life. Our campuses bring together students from different parts of Kerala, India, and sometimes from different countries. We may speak different languages, follow different traditions, and have different opinions. Yet we share the same campus, the same classrooms, and many of the same dreams.
Our diversity should not divide us; it should enrich us.
Onam also teaches us the importance of sharing. The traditional Onam Sadya is not simply a feast. It represents abundance and the joy of sharing what we have with others. In a world where many people still struggle with poverty, hunger, loneliness, and exclusion, the spirit of Onam challenges us to remember those who have less than we do.
As educated young people, we have a special responsibility. Education should not merely help us earn a good salary. It should also help us become compassionate, responsible, and socially conscious human beings.
Let us celebrate Onam by helping someone who needs our support, respecting those who are different from us, protecting our environment, and standing against injustice and discrimination.
Onam is also a celebration of our Kerala identity and cultural heritage. Traditional arts, music, dance, games, cuisine, and customs connect us with generations that came before us. In an age of rapid technological change and globalization, preserving our cultural heritage while remaining open to the wider world is an important responsibility for young people.
Let us enjoy the colours of the Pookkalam, the rhythm of traditional songs, the excitement of Vallamkali, the beauty of Thiruvathira, and the togetherness of the Sadya—but let us also carry the deeper message of Onam into our daily lives.
May this Onam inspire us to build a campus where everyone feels respected, a society where everyone has opportunities, and a world where compassion is stronger than division.
Let us welcome this Onam with grateful hearts, renewed hope, and a commitment to make a positive difference wherever we are.
May the spirit of Onam bring happiness to our families, unity to our communities, and peace and prosperity to our society.
Wishing you all a very happy, peaceful, and meaningful Onam!
Thank you.
